What Happens in Online Therapy for Gambling?

Online therapy for gambling means working one to one with a practitioner over video, from home, on what keeps the gambling going. At Gambling Recovery Therapy it starts with a free, no-obligation 30-minute call and, if it feels right, moves into a structured six-week programme with support between sessions.

If you have searched for this, there is a good chance you have already tried a few things. Deleting the apps. Closing accounts. Promising yourself, and maybe someone else, that this was the last time. And there is a good chance part of you is wondering whether therapy will just be another thing that does not quite work.

That is a reasonable worry, so this page sets out plainly what actually happens, from the first call to the last session, so you can decide with your eyes open.

Step one: a free 30-minute call

The first conversation is not therapy, and it is not a sales pitch. It is a chance to talk about where you are, what has been happening and what you want to change. There is nothing to prepare and nothing to sign. You do not need to have stopped gambling, and you do not need to have the words for it.

By the end of the call you should have a sense of whether this approach fits you, and we will have a sense of whether we are the right people to help. If we are not, we will say so and point you somewhere better.

What the six weeks look like

If you go ahead, you work with the same person from start to finish, so you never have to repeat your story to someone new. Each session builds on the one before.

  1. Initial assessment. A full session exploring your experiences, your patterns and what you want to change, including how gambling has affected your relationships.
  2. Building calm and confidence. Work on emotional regulation and steadiness, so you have a stable base for the deeper work.
  3. Transformational hypnotherapy. An extended session of around two hours working with the root causes of the gambling. Afterwards you receive a personalised hypnosis recording to use between sessions.
  4. Integration and coaching. Making sense of what has shifted, with practical tools for daily life and a focus on rebuilding trust and connection.
  5. A personalised deeper session. Shaped by your progress, drawing on whichever approaches suit you best, from parts work and somatic techniques to hypnotherapy.
  6. Consolidation coaching. Reviewing your progress, reinforcing the change and planning how you keep building on it.

Sessions range from 45 minutes to two hours depending on the work involved.

Between sessions you are not on your own

The hardest moments rarely arrive during an appointment. They arrive on a Friday night, after payday, or when something stressful happens and the old pull returns. So alongside the sessions there is support by email, WhatsApp or Messenger, Monday to Friday, with a reply the same day wherever possible and always within 24 hours.

Why the focus is on what sits underneath

Blocking software, bank gambling blocks and self-exclusion are genuinely useful, and we encourage them. But they work on access, not on the reason you keep going back. If you have used them and still found a way round, that is usually a sign there is something the gambling is doing for you: switching off, escaping, chasing relief, or quietening something that is hard to sit with.

The work is about understanding that, and changing how you respond to it, so that stopping is not a daily fight with yourself. We draw on clinical hypnotherapy, Rapid Transformational Therapy, somatic approaches and other techniques according to what fits you.

Is online therapy as effective as face to face?

For many people it is easier, which matters. You attend from somewhere private and familiar, with no waiting room and no one seeing you walk in. You can fit sessions around work and family, including evenings and weekends. And because it is online, you can work with someone who specialises in gambling harm wherever you live.

What if I am sceptical?

Most people are, especially about hypnotherapy. You do not need to believe it will work before you start. You only need to be willing to take part. Many of the people we have worked with arrived doubtful and say so in their own words on our support for gambling page.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to stop gambling before I start therapy?

No. Many people book their first call while they are still gambling. Getting support is part of how stopping becomes possible, not a reward for having already managed it.

Is it confidential?

Yes. Sessions are private and one to one, and you decide who, if anyone, you tell that you are getting support.

Can I do it if I live outside the UK?

Yes. All sessions are online and we work with people worldwide.

Can my partner get support too?

Yes. Partners and family members are affected too, and we offer separate support for them. See support for people affected by someone else's gambling.
